Haloragis erecta 'Wellington Bronze' is a selected cultivar of the New Zealand native Haloragis erecta, Erect Seaberry or Toatoa. It has browny-bronze foliage that has finely serrrated margins, burgundy stems and very tiny white and pink flowers in late summer. It is for the rusty colour of the foliage that contrasts so well with a large number of perennials that this quirky plant is usually grown. It creates a mass of small tawny leaves that stands about 30-60 cms above the ground mingling in and out of whatever plants it is grown with. It is very undemanding in its cultivation and will grow on any soil. It will start self-seeding after the first year and the seedlings tend to pop up all over the place often creating unexpected and completely unplanned plant combinations that are startlingly successful. Green, blue, sliver, and yellow-coloured foliage plants all seem to benefit by its proximity. It manages to do this planting combination magic without being especially invasive but any plants that aren't wanted can be easily pulled out.and composted. It can also be chopped back throughout the growing season and quickly comes back reinvigorated. A subtle and curious plant that does need some management but is too useful not to have in your garden.
