Curcuma longa, Turmeric, is a popular culinary spice but not often grown in the UK. It loves warmth and humidity and is best grown in semi-shade in a sheltered aspect. It is very tropical in its requirements and ideally should be grown in a container so that it can be brought into a warm frost-free environment in the winter. A shady humid glasshouse will also be perfect for it. Growth will die down in the winter months and the roots can be dug up and divided if required, keeping some for the kitchen and the others for next year's plants.

The foliage is lush and the terminal inflorescence is tall and upright with small white and yellow flowers emerging from the highly ornamental green and white bracts.
