Waldsteinia ternata
Waldsteinia ternata, Siberian Waldsteinia is a tough, extremely hardy perennial groundcover with a wide natural range with disjunct populations from central Europe across to China, Siberia, Sakhalin and Japan. A member of the Rosaceae, its cheerful yellow flowers have the five-petalled blossoms that are a typical feature of the Rose family and appear from April through to June. The trifoliate leaves are similar to those of the strawberry and in most parts of the UK during the winter dormancy, it remains evergreen or at least semi-evergreen, forming a low leafy carpet, spreading slowly by its undeground stolons.
It is hard to find a simpler, more undemanding plant than Waldsteinia ternata. For a dark corner of a garden or woodland setting where a no-fuss groundcover is required it is perfect, flowering freely in the spring despite the neglect.
