Hedychium greenii is understood to have originated in Bhutan where it was first collected by Mr H. F. Green. It has a distinctive maroon colouring on the undersides of its handsome foliage and striking orange-red flowers. The stems also have a very distinctive reddish-maroon color. It is hardy in most parts of the UK and like all Hedychiums will benefit from a thick mulch in the winter months together with a rich soil and plenty of water and regular feeding during the growing season. Like a lot of Hedychiums it sometimes struggles to flower in the waning light and heat of a typical British autumn and is best planted in the warmest sunniest south-facing aspect you have.
