Arundo donax 'Golden Chain'
Arundo donax 'Golden Chain' is an exceptionally beautiful cultivar of the Giant Reed with a creamy golden-yellow and green variegation originally introduced by Liam Mackenzie. It does not grow as tall as Arundo donax and has a less aggressive habit and thus is more suited to the typically smaller UK garden. If well watered throughout the summer it maintains its colour well and the combination of yellow and bright green on the large sword-shaped leaves is particularly pleasing.
It requires a warm sunny aspect and likes its roots moist. The leaves die back in autumn and turn brown and should be left on the plant to give it extra protection throughout the winter. It is not as hardy as Arundo donax and will require mulching in some colder regions of the UK. As winter draws to an end and the Spring weather starts to warm the ground, the old growth can be cut back to invigorate and stimulate growth in the new shoots.
