Dryopteris filix-mas, the Male Fern is a vigorous Northern Hemisphere fern with large upright fronds that form an impressive shuttlecock shape. The bi-pinnate fronds have pinnules that have serrated margins and are rounded at the ends. It is a tough fern, tolerant of dry conditions and extremely hardy with a deciduous habit. It is perfect in a shady or semi-shaded location amongst other woodlanders but will also take some sun.
