Cordyline australis 'Purpurea' is the purple-foliaged cultivar of Cordyline australis, the popular New Zealand Cabbage Tree. Not quite as vigorous or strong-growing as the type species, Cordyline australis 'Purpurea' will nonetheless grow into an impressive tall architectural plant if given a good root-run in a relatively sheltered position. Don't make the often-repeated mistake of trying to grow this as a container plant. Cordylines just hate that mistreatment and need to be in the ground. Cordyline australis 'Pupurea' usually grows a leaner more slender stem than the type species and it often branches less, giving it a more palm-like appearance.

The fragrant flowers are borne on large racemes in mid-summer and are highly attractive to bees.
