Maihuenia poeppigii

Maihuenia poeppigii is a wonderful hardy cactus from high elevations in Southern Chile and Argentina that forms low, dense, prostrate mats and is capable of withstanding severe frost, snow-cover and some winter-wet. The many cylindrical segments are covered in white spines and the new growth displays small leaf segments similar to many Opuntias. Branching and re-rooting itself into a shallow rocky substrate, it soon covers a wide area. Yellow flowers are borne in summer followed by large fruits.

Maihuenia poeppigii is best grown in conditions that replicate its conditions in the wild. Dry, rocky soil, ideally spread in a thin layer over a larger flat rock that is raised to allow rainwater to run off. The entire structure can replicate a traditional rockery. If mineral-rich volcanic rock dust is added to the substrate so much the better. It is this perfect drainage that is key to success as British and European winters will always be wetter than its natural conditions.

Combining well in a xeric landscape with Opuntias and other hardy cacti, Maiheunia poeppiggi is a valuable addition to the cactus garden where its robust temperament make it a 'must-have' plant.
