Arum dioscoridis

Arum dioscoridis, Spotted Arum, is a dramatic Arum from the Eastern Mediterranean with a startlingly attractive inflorescence and handsome foliage. The spadix is dark purple-black and the spathe is pale greenish but heavily splotched with dark purplish spots. It has one of the most powerfully pungent aromas of all the Arum lilies.

Arum dioscoridis requires a rich but very well drained soil with plenty of added grit to ensure it doesn't rot in winter. It should be positioned in full sun although it will tolerate some shade. Its new growth commences in autumn through winter and it flowers in Spring. In UK conditions, it needs little extra watering other than what the elements gives it as its growth cycle corresponds to the wettest time of the year. After flowering it goes into summer dormancy and should be kept as dry as possible during this period.
