Anisocampium niponicum var pictum 'Burgundy Lace'
Anisocampium niponicum var pictum 'Burgundy Lace is another of the selected cultivars of the Japanese Painted Fern, more familiar by its out-dated synonym, Athyrium niponicum var pictum 'Burgundy Lace'.
Anisocampium niponicum var pictum 'Burgundy Lace has a spectacular colouration of pale silvery fronds with the stipes, rachis and rachillae all a dark purple. There is a dark band of colour on either side of the rachis. Like so many of the other Anisocampium cultivars, its colouration is strongest in the Spring with some of the fronds fading to green over the course of the summer.
What is the difference between this 'Burgundy Lace' and 'Ursula's Red' ? It's a good question... The differences are slight and subtle. To my eye, 'Burgundy Lace' is more silvery in Spring and the stipes, rachis and rachillae on 'Burgundy Lace' are darker and more purple. Other than that they are very similar.
Anisocampium niponicum var pictum 'Burgundy Lace' is a very hardy deciduous fern and requires a shady location in a humus-rich soil.
