Agave chrysantha
- Geomtrically symmetrical rosette
- Glaucous-green deeply guttered foliage
- Full sun
- Perfect drainage, especially during winter
Agave chrysantha, Yellow Flowering Agave is a stunningly beautiful hardy Agave from Arizona where is grows in gritty dry soils at altitude in pine-juniper forest, chapparal scrubland and oak woodlands and at lower levels on grassland and desert scrubland. It has a highly ornamental and symmetrical rosette of glaucous-green foliage which is deeply guttered on the upper adaxial surface. It can be either solitary or clustering with offsets and the rosette is a medium size - from 70-100cm at maturity - which is ideal for most gardens. It has a tall inflorescence with golden-yellow flowers - an unusual colour for Agave flowers.
Like all Agaves it requires perfect drainage in a gritty gravelly substrate. The addition of limestone chunks and basalt dust to the mix will be of enormous benefit to its health and subsequent growth. Water it well during the heat of summer but keep it as dry as possible from late October through to late February or early March.
Protect with fleece and a rain-shelter during prolonged periods of extreme sub-zero temperatures or prolonged winter rain.
